QUIN
IRISH CASTLE KEEP & COACH HOUSE
County Clare, Ireland

THE CASTLE KEEP

Accommodates 8
4 bedrooms
2  bathrooms
High Speed Internet

This is a fine 15th century Irish keep or peel tower.  First restored in the 1970s and recently redecorated, this castle offers the authenticity of ancient times without sacrificing the comforts of modern living.  All furnishings are in keeping with a 15th C. tower, but it doesn’t look like a stage set.  Rich colors, comfortable furniture, tasteful appointments and the glorious views make this the perfect property for a romantic holiday.  It is quintessentially Ireland.

Ireland Castle Rental - County Clare, Ireland

Step through an arched door into a small entranceway that has stone floors and walls.  The original stone staircase, built with no central support column, spirals upward.  In keeping with early custom, the stairway curves to the left going down allowing defenders to have their sword arm free as they descended.

The entranceway opens into the large medieval-style dining room that has stone walls and arches and oak ceiling beams.  Once a holding area for animals, it now has a large oak refectory table and 16 chairs.  A second small table in the alcove that has four additional chairs.

The kitchen, to the right of the dining room, has a stone floor, beamed ceiling, a stainless steel double sink, microwave, a dishwasher, washer/dryer and a port for wireless high-speed Internet access (yes, in a 13th century fortified keep!).  Dark cupboards have a Gothic design.  A gas fireplace is in the corner.

This room is so nicely done that, despite modern accouterments, it's hard to remember that the room is not original to the castle. Windows look onto the green lawns.  A door opens to the front of the property.

Each room above the main floor is on its own floor level, one room to a floor.

The first level has an arched door opening into a bedroom that has an antique oak double 4-poster bed, an armoire, a dressing table, stone floor with under floor heating,  tapestry-print fabrics, views to the green lawns and meadow.

Up another level, there is a nice bathroom with a large, deep tub with a stone and tile surround and a hook-up shower.

Up again to a bedroom that has a king bed that can be converted to twin beds, two small, ornate chest of drawers and a wide window that has a 6-foot deep cushion-covered ledge that is comfortable enough for a nap.

Up the stairs again, there is a small bathroom that has stone walls and counter tops and a deep tub with a hand-held shower.  The windows are the original arrow slits (now glazed, of course).

Up again to the sitting room.  It has comfortable furniture, old in the good way, lovely antiques, wall hangings.  There is a TV, video, DVD player, stereo, telephone. The large inglenook fireplace has a wide ledge on which to perch.  The ceiling is tall and arched.  The large window looks toward the front, over the lush farmland and, beyond, to distant  roof tops and meadow to the Shannon estuary.

Up again to the third bedroom, also with an antique queen 4-poster bed and antique furniture.  It is a bit smaller that the first two bedrooms, but it’s terrific.  It has a large window that has far reaching views over horses and sheep to the Shannon estuary.

Up still again to a very large bedroom that has a 4-poster king bed and antique furniture and a tall, arched oak-beamed ceiling.  This bedroom is undergoing a complete redecoration.  We’ll visit again soon and take photos of it then.

From this bedroom, stairs go up to the turret.  Standing on the turret, you can see, in the distance, the Burren and the sea.  We felt as if we could see all of Ireland.

THE CASTLE COACH HOUSE
Accommodates 6+2
3 bedrooms
3 bathrooms

This beautiful 19th century stone coach house is located a few yards from the castle, across a deep green lawn.  The coach house can be rented alone or with the castle.

Enter into the welcoming and spacious sitting room.  It has stone walls, wood floors, two comfortable sofas, antiques, art, a fine old Oriental rug and wood stove provide an atmosphere of warmth and casual elegance.

The TV room, off the sitting room, is very pleasant with two comfortable sofas, a TV, video player and a DVD player.  An area rug covers wood floors.  One sofa is blue; the other is red, white, black, green, blue.  One of the sofas opens into a double bed to sleep 2, if necessary.  Curtains are red, green, yellow, blue and cream stripes. similar to one of the sofas.  The window alcove has a red cushion.

The kitchen is terrific, a blend of old and modern.  It has wood floors, granite counter tops, a center island that doubles as a breakfast table for 3.  There is a dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, a gas hob and electric oven and grill.  A small utility room has a washer and dryer.

The separate dining room has a modern table to seat 8 comfortably.  There are wood floors, a large Irish dresser with pottery and glassware, an armoire that holds other dining items and a beautiful old Persian rug.  The room is both homey and sophisticated.

The conservatory, off the living room and beside the kitchen, is perfect for those cool Irish evenings.  It has comfortable seating and lots of plants and flowers.  A door from the conservatory opens onto the back patio.

Upstairs, a large landing has a desk and desk chair and two director’s chairs.  Small windows give good light and look out to the castle.  It’s a nice area in which to have a quiet moment or two.

The master bedroom has a queen bed, two wood wardrobes and a dressing table.  Walls are magnolia; the carpeting is a golden hue.  Bed linen and curtains are cream with embroidered flowers.  The en suite bathroom has a shower and there is a small ceiling window.

One bedroom has twin beds, large old pine fitted wardrobes with drawers. Again, colours are creams and white, very calming and neutral.

The third bedroom has a standard double bed, a wardrobe and an antique mahogany  chest of drawers, a desk and chair.  Colors remain neutral, but the bed’s quilt provides a splash of red.

These two bedrooms share a hallway bathroom that has a tub with a hand shower.  An antique pine dresser provides excellent storage.

The patio, off the conservatory, has garden furniture and potted plants.  It is a lovely and quiet place to sit and read or just relax.  Overlooking the long back garden, one often sees riders from the nearby equestrian center trekking by the castle.

If you book the castle and coach house together, additional dinnerware and dining chairs will be added in the castle so everyone can dine together.

This is a region renown for its historic interest.  There are many other castles, fortresses and keeps to visit.  The nearby villages have authentic pubs and very good restaurants.  Horse riding, fishing, hunting, golf and Irish music are available within a few minutes’ drive.  The Burren, an austere and rocky plateau, famous for its Mediterranean and alpine plants, is nearby. There is easy access to the coast and the beautiful area of Galway, the Connemara.

Linens are changed weekly.  If you stay longer than one week, there is a linen/towel change 1/2 through your stay.  If you'd like additional cleaning, it will be provided as the cleaners are available.

ACCESSIBILITY NOTICE:
