Step through an arched door into a small entranceway that has stone floors and walls. The original stone staircase, built with no central support column, spirals upward. In keeping with early custom, the stairway curves to the left going down allowing defenders to have their sword arm free as they descended. |
The entranceway opens into the large medieval-style dining room that has stone walls and arches and oak ceiling beams. Once a holding area for animals, it now has a large oak refectory table and 16 chairs. A second small table in the alcove that has four additional chairs.

The kitchen, to the right of the dining room, has a stone floor, beamed ceiling, a stainless steel double sink, microwave, a dishwasher, washer/dryer and a port for wireless high-speed Internet access (yes, in a 13th century fortified keep!). Dark cupboards have a Gothic design. A gas fireplace is in the corner.
This room is so nicely done that, despite modern accouterments, it's hard to remember that the room is not original to the castle. Windows look onto the green lawns. A door opens to the front of the property. |
Each
room above the main floor is on its own floor level, one room to a
floor.

The
first level has an arched door opening into a bedroom that has an
antique oak double 4-poster bed, an armoire, a dressing table, stone
floor with under floor heating, tapestry-print fabrics, views
to the green lawns and meadow.
Up another level, there is
a nice bathroom with a large, deep tub with a stone and tile surround
and a hook-up shower.
Up
the stairs again, there is a small bathroom that has stone walls and
counter tops and a deep tub with a hand-held shower. The
windows are the original arrow slits (now glazed, of course).
Up again to the sitting room. It has comfortable furniture, old in the good way, lovely antiques, wall hangings. There is a TV, video, DVD player, stereo, telephone. The large inglenook fireplace has a wide ledge on which to perch. The ceiling is tall and arched. The large window looks toward the front, over the lush farmland and, beyond, to distant roof tops and meadow to the Shannon estuary. |

Up again to the third bedroom, also with an antique queen 4-poster bed and antique furniture. It is a bit smaller that the first two bedrooms, but it’s terrific. It has a large window that has far reaching views over horses and sheep to the Shannon estuary. |
Up still again to a very large bedroom that has a 4-poster king bed and antique furniture and a tall, arched oak-beamed ceiling. This bedroom is undergoing a complete redecoration. We’ll visit again soon and take photos of it then. |
