12 6 bedrooms 4 bathrooms, 1 guest powder room This is a luxurious 17th C. country house that overlooks the village green in the charming village of Winson, which many consider the prettiest valley in the Cotswolds. The house has been beautifully furnished with antiques and fine appointments collected over many years. Enter into a spacious welcoming hallway that has oak floors, a sofa, oak tables and 19th century prints on the walls. There is a guest powder room off the hall. |

The
large drawing room has comfortable, traditional furniture, four sofas
and
one armchair upholstered in green fabric, fruit wood and oak tables and
an upholstered window seat for staring out at the world. There is
a grand piano (for accomplished players only, please), a fireplace with
a wood stove insert, old beams, three beautiful Afghan rugs over
dark maple floors. There is a TV, video player, CD, a play
station
and board games. Windows offer extensive views of the gardens and the
lake.
French doors open onto the terrace.

The dining room has a antique yew dining table with matching chairs to seat 12. There are old beams, an antique sideboard, oak floors a wood stove. English watercolors and prints hang on the walls. Windows, draped in a rich red and gold fabric, have views are of the village green. |

kitchen has a double oven, dishwasher, microwave,
refrigerator/freezer.
A separate laundry room has a washer and dryer and a butler’s
sink.
A boot room another refrigerator/freezeer and another butler’s
sink.
A door opens to the back garden.

Up
one level, the master bedroom has a queen-size mahogany
hand-carved
4-poster bed with a canopy covered with luxurious hand-woven Indian
green
silk. There is a Victorian mahogany chaise lounge, a large
built-in
wardrobe, antique bedside tables. Draperies are in rich
green
and red fabric (matching the bed’s side curtains). Carpeting is soft
warm
straw-colored Irish wool. Walls are off-white with undertones of
pale green. Views are of the rear garden and the trout lake
downriver.
The green and gray Carara marble en suite bathroom has a tub and
separate
shower. Views are over the rear garden. |
| Another bedroom, painted warm white, has a single bed with a pull-out bed underneath. The bed is fine for an adult, but the pull-out bed is better for a child. Blue Bedroom has a queen bed platform bed, a built-in wardrobe, a love
seat covered in blue, an antique chest of drawers, straw-colored Irish
wool carpeting. A window looks directly over the village green.
Fabrics
are dark blue with off-white woodwork and furniture.
This room shares with the "study bedroom" a large hallway bathroom that has a tub and a separate shower. |

Up another level, reached via a spiral staircase, there are two more bedrooms. These bedrooms have sloped ceilings, but they are high enough for all but the very tallest adults. The Sweetpea Bedroom has a standard double bed, and upholstered headboard with apricot-toned fabric, a bedside table, a small chest of drawers, straw-colored Irish wool carpeting, exposed beams. |

The
large terrace has a gas barbecue and is perfect for al fresco dining.
Two acres of park-like grounds consist of lawns, a formal long border,
a wild garden, an orchard. There is a private spring-fed trout
lake
(two fly fishing rods are available). From the yew arbor, you can
watch the river's visiting wildlife, moor hens, ducks and wild
swans.
There is a hammock that can be strung between two trees along the
riverside
for a tranquil snooze. |
The village is about equidistant from Cirencester, Burford and Stow on the Wold, all quintessential Cotswold towns. Beautiful Bibury village is two miles. Cirencester has many restaurants and pubs, a Farmers` Market, the Corinium Museum and specialty shops. There are several stunning wool churches including Cirencester, Northleach, Bibury and Fairford. Cotswold Water Park and Keynes Country Park offering jet skiing, canoeing, sailing, fishing, mini golf and a beach, are nearby. The Roman villa at Chedworth is four miles. Cotswold Wildlife Park, Birdland and Batsford Arboretum are close. Cerney House Garden, Hidcote, Kiftsgate and Westonbirt Arboretum are a few of the fabulous gardens that are open to the public. Gloucester Cathedral, Malmesbury Abbey, Hailes Abbey are all in the vicinity. Bath and Stratford-upon-Avon are about an hour's drive, Oxford and Cheltenham are about 1/2 an hour.
This house books Friday-to-Friday. This house is not appropriate for children under 5 years old because the lake and river bank, 100 yards from the house, are not fenced. Stag and hen parties are not accepted. Pets are not allowed. This is a strict non- smoking household. Five bicycles of various sizes are available.
