up to 23* 12 bedrooms Serviced only, not self-catering Weddings and other special events Helipad Duns Castle is a magnificent place. Originally built around a 1320 Pele Tower, it was purchased by an ancestor of the present owner in 1696. When we visited, the chatelaine was busy preparing for a large gathering that evening; nevertheless, she graciously spent hours with us over tea, walking through the wonderful rooms and giving us a detailed history. She has a strong emotional investment in this place for which she and her husband are guardians. |

One
enters the castle through a large, wide center hall under a high Gothic
ceiling. Up a flight of wide, graceful stairs, one is greeted by
the portraits of ancestors, including the daughter of Mary Seton,
lady-in-waiting to Mary, Queen of Scots. There is intricately
carved
wood and plaster work, among the best in Britain. |
| The
large dining hall is a dramatic room with a fireplace mantle carved
with intricate griffins and original 14th century walls and furniture,
lighting and rugs that create an amber glow. The food is
simple, genuine, imaginative and Scottish. Meals are served at a
specific time. When the owners are at home, they will join you
for dinner. This is a special treat for everyone. |
