WESTPORT
STONE CHURCH HOUSE

County Mayo, Ireland
Accommodates 8 + 2
4 bedrooms
3 bathrooms

This converted church is a romantic surprise.  A former Church of Ireland property, it was built in 1835.  After it was hit by lightning in 1902, it sat empty and unused for almost 100 years. The current owners have lovingly restored the building and converted it into a most unusual and special home.  The husband, Andrew, is an architect and his design has paid tribute to the house's past without sacrificing any comforts of the present.

Entry hall from inside - Stone Church vacation rental
Enter through the arched door into an entry hallway that has tall Gothic stone walls.  It's a very impressive space.  To the right is a bathroom with a shower.  Lovely colored stone tiles adorn the bathroom walls. Stone tiled shower room off entry

Straight ahead, the sitting room has a cream colored L-shaped sofa covered with a cotton throw and many pillows.  There is a low wood coffee table with a low bench seat covered in needlepoint, a woven area rug over wood floors, a stone fireplace with a raised hearth.  A tall antique Chinese armoire holds a TV, DVD player, CD's and board games.  Three steps up is a another sitting area that has a red velvet settee and an antique wood chest.  There is a bookcase and a second fireplace with a wood stove insert, stone walls, touches of sage green and more red, a sense of openness and space.

The kitchen has a large gas oven, a refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher. A baker's rack holds dishes and glassware. A center island serves as storage and a counter top. The washer and dryer are in an adjacent closet.

The dining area has large antique wood table that seats 8 on heavy wooden chairs. There is a huge stone fireplace with a wood stove. Floors are stone.  This is a bright and cheerful room.  A door leads to an outdoor dining area.

Back at the front hallway, stairs go up to a high platform above which is the original bell tower.  Two bedrooms are on this upper level.  They are accessed via a stone stairway that enables one to view the entire church interior from that vantage point.

One of the upstairs bedrooms has a queen bed with oak headboard and footboard and a lush patchwork quilt in jewel tones.  Bedside tables, a chest of drawers and a wardrobe provide excellent storage.  Walls are painted plum and mauve.  Double doors open to overlook the kitchen and, through the kitchen windows, the grounds and further hillside.  This lets in enormous amounts of natural light.

The en suite bathroom has a claw foot slipper tub with a hand-held shower.  A slit window opens to see down to the kitchen windows.

Across the landing, the second upstairs bedroom has a queen iron canopy bed with a shiny, lush green-gold quilt.  Walls are stone and one wall is painted light moss.  As in the other bedroom, a double door overlooks the kitchen.  One arched window looks out onto Croagh Patrick Mountain.  The en suite bathroom has a claw foot tub with hand-held shower.  An arched window has the same gorgeous view as the bedroom.

Downstairs, between the living area and the kitchen/dining room, there are two more bedrooms.  One bedroom has a queen bed with a cherrywood headboard and footboard, a beautifully rich chenille bed cover, a large wardrobe, bedside tables, three stone walls and one sage green wall, beautiful windows looking onto the grounds.

The other bedroom is for children.  It has two bunk beds, a small chest with a TV, one orange wall and high windows.

These two main-floor bedrooms share the hallway bathroom that is off the front entry of the house.

The layout of the church is hard to visualize so we have a separate page with floor plans to help you get a picture of how all this comes together.

The acoustics in this house are amazing.  A sound system provides music that resonates throughout the entire house.  Bring your laptop or Ipod and hook into the fabulous wireless sound system.   We wish we could give you a sample of the beauty of this sound.

The surrounding area is a haven of breathtaking views of coastlines, mountains, lakes, rivers and beaches, all within minutes of the property.  It is only a short drive to the lively, picture postcard town of Westport.  Also nearby is Newport and, slightly further away, but well worth a visit are Achill Island, Lough Corrib, and the Burren.

Nearby attractions include walking, cycling, horse riding, sea and lake fishing, golf (one course overlooks picturesque Clew Bay). There are several excellent leisure centres with pools & fully equipped gyms. Restaurants, pubs and live music abound in Westport. There are many historical sites, museums, gardens and country houses.

As this was once the community's church, there are still three graves with tombstones on the property.  They date to the mid 1800s.  While children are warmly welcomed to this house, the owners don't recommend the property to families who have very young children as the stairs are a bit tricky and not toddler-friendly. The house has a pay-as-you-go mobile phone.

Westport is 3 miles.  Clifden is 37 miles.  Galway City is 55 miles.  Shannon Airport is 106 miles.  Dublin is 160 miles.

ACCESSIBILITY NOTICE:

This property is suitable for guests who have moderate mobility limitations.  A small wheelchair could fit in the main floor bathroom's shower stall.  The ground floor bedrooms are rather small for a wheelchair.
